Paint.NET depends on Microsoft's.NET Framework 4.7.2, which is automatically installed if it isn't already on the system. Paint.NET will automatically run in 64-bit mode if possible. You must have a 64-bit capable CPU and an x64 edition of Windows. Microsoft Paint was added on AlternativeTo by on Mar 22, 2009 and this page was last updated on Feb 28, 2020. Microsoft Paint is sometimes referred to as Paint, Paintbrush. AlternativeTo is a free service that helps you find better alternatives to the products you love and hate.

Microsoft Paint is also known as MS Paint. It is a basic graphics drawing program that has been an indispensable part of all versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. MSP provides easy ways for creating different types of graphics with different tools. The tools include brushes, shape generators, pens, and erasers. Many users of Windows might also be unaware of its presence, considering the popularity of web-based graphics creation tools. So, you need to know exactly from where to access MS Paint.

The simplicity of MS Paint is the foremost reason for its popularity among users for graphic editing. Let us take note of the different tools that you can get with MS Paint for creating and editing graphics. The foremost instrument which you can note in MS Paint refers to the drawing tools. The different icons in the 'Tool Box' indicate the different artistic tools such as brushes, erasers, and freehand drawing. You can also find other tools in the 'Tool Box' for creating shapes such as squares, rectangles, and circles.

Interestingly, the 'Fill with Color' tool can help you color a particular section of a graphic in a particular color. As a result, you don't have to take the trouble of coloring the section manually. You can also use the 'Tool Box' for adding text to images on MS Paint. Users could also find tools for zooming in and out of a particular image alongside tools for modifying the whole image. For example, you have the 'Flip and Rotate' option for turning the image in the desired direction. Most important of all, MS Paint provides the flexibility of sharing an open file through email.

When we got the first computer on our hands, as a kid, we were intrigued with MS paint. It was the one application that made us aware that digitally we could unleash our creativity. All of us, especially the 90s kids were a bit disheartened when we learned that Microsoft will stop supporting MS paint very soon, in order to promote Paint 3D, that comes with windows 10. Although Paint is still available in Windows, eventually Microsoft plans to remove it permanently and only keep it as a Windows store product for users who still wants to use MS Paint.

Try Out the Next Best Thing

Those of us who still want to make MS Paint a part of their life, the next best thing is in store. Behold MS Paint online. https://ameblo.jp/minaconnan3/entry-12650233144.html. It is an easy to use web-based application, the look and feel of which is exactly like MS Paint. Not only that, the user interface of MS Paint online resembles the version of MS Paint used in older versions of windows. With the color pallet located at the bottom and classical sidebar icons, the app promises you the old Windows Classic experience. I personally checked out the tool and found it working properly in all major browsers without any cross-browser compatibility issues.

Specifications of MS Paint Online

Let's take a look at the features of MS Paint online and how it succeeds to revive the MS Paint experience of old Windows.

  • The web-based application works perfectly in all devices, operating systems as well as all major browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer.
  • In the old MS Paint, the user was given only 3 chances to undo or redo his action. In MS Paint online, you have unlimited redos and undoing.
  • If you allow storage in your local system, your work will be autosaved.
  • In Stretch/Skew, it allows you to stretch the image by more than 500% at one try.
  • Let's suppose you and some of your friends are planning to work together on a project. You can start a new multi-user session and share the link with your friends. However, this is not seamless. Actions performed by your friends can interrupt your current work. Also, these sessions are not private and anytime, you can lose your work.
  • Since browsers support SVG, you can use this app to open and edit SVG files.
  • You can easily rotate the images by using Ctrl + < and Ctrl + >. What's more special, instead of rotating images by only 90 degrees, you can rotate them by any angle of your choice.
  • Cropping images doesn't require you to use the crop tool. You can hold the Ctrl key and select any portion of the image to crop it.

What is New in MS Paint online?

Now that we have discussed how MS Paint online enhances the old features of MS Paint, let's see what extra features are added.

  • First of all, you can edit and create transparent images. Navigate to Image => Attributes to access the transparency tool. If any image has transparent pixels, by default they will open in transparent mode.
  • For accessing the extra features, navigate to view => Extras. You will find loads of features which were not there in MS paint.
  • The app gives you multiple themes. Go to the Extras menu and choose any theme according to your preference.
  • You can create animated GIFs using this app. You can access the tool either from Extras or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+G. However, while creating a GIF, check the image size since GIFs tend to have a larger size.
  • Apart from the set of preset colors, you can also add new color formats by going to the Get Colors option.
  • Just click or tap on the selected color and you can switch between background and foreground colors.
  • The best feature is, the app even works in mobile.

Limitations of the App

Such a huge app with so many features is bound to have some limitations.

  • There were few issues like sudden halt of Quick Undo in Chrome.
  • Apart from the major browsers, in browsers that are not so well known yet used by millions, the app does not work properly.
  • Gliding through the options in Firefox and Chrome for Mobile still has some bugs.
  • Contents of a textbox move up and down while you are rasterizing an image.

So when I first made the switch from Windows to macOS a few years back, one of the gripes I had and can imagine many other people having too is the absence of a stand-alone basic graphics or painting utility application. While Apple kind of pioneered such apps on personal computers with their Macintoshes shipping with MacPaint, the scenario has been quite different since the last 3 decades with MacPaint seeing its last release in 1988. Today we take a look at 5 different paint app for mac; whether you are someone who has been missing MS Paint on Mac OS or just looking for a basic painting app, this list is for you.

Before we begin

Even though we don't have a full-fledged paint app, the Preview app does offer a few basic tools that you can use as an alternative. To get started, open Preview and open up the image you want to edit or simply open the image with Preview directly. Next show the Markup Toolbar by clicking the icon shown below.

You can now find a whole host of editing options from simple sketching and drawing to insertion of various shapes and text and even adjusting image parameters like exposure, contrast, sharpness, and a lot more. You also get the ability to add a signature or signing your PDFs from Preview itself, image size formatting, and text formatting options.

Although Preview has a lot to offer, it may not be the perfect replacement for some as it does not allow you to create new image files which is its biggest setback.

Quick Tip: Be sure to first make a copy of your image before editing with Preview, as it automatically saves all your changes and it could be really hard to revert back if you have already saved the image. https://myabrangalgei1984.mystrikingly.com/blog/uctox-2-5-6-full-featured-invoicing-app-developer.

1. Paint Brush

Download Classic Paint For Windows 10

Paint Brush for Mac OS is like the perfect replica of MS paint. The app is quite bare-bones and extremely easy to use, offering just the basic functions of a paint application.

Unlike Preview, in this app, you can create a new document and this is the first thing you are greeted with, on opening the application and you can state the size of your canvas. It offers all the basic functionalities just as MS paint like a pencil, color fill, shapes, text, magnification, and also a color picker tool which comes in very handy. It also supports most image formats including JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, and GIF.

Paint Brush is also very fast to open and get work done with and will be perfect for doing some small editing or painting stuff in a jiffy.

Paint S is sort of a middle ground when you want more features than MS Paint but not quite full-fledged as Photoshop. You can use this drawing tool to edit photos, create art, and do basic scaling of images. The basic array of tools that you get with this app include fill, eyedropper, line, curve, rectangle, ellipse, and text.

Starcraft wings of liberty free. Other than that, it also has some advanced tools the enhance the functionality of the app such as transparency, drop shadow, grids, rulers, and even layers. The layer function lets you edit over existing images without permanently changing the picture completely and a lot of Paint users would love this functionality.

Quick Tip: You can quickly toggle between layers and shift those to hide or reveal the layer elements without worrying about where those elements are on the canvas. https://architectfree.mystrikingly.com/blog/the-long-dark-bear-skin-coat.

3. Seashore

Seashore is a free, open-source paint application for Mac OS built entirely in Cocoa. While the UI might seem a little dated, the app has a lot of tricks up its sleeves which makes it an upgrade to Preview or Paint Brush.
SeaShore introduces the concept of layers, just like you have in Photoshop. The layers work like sheets of acetate stacked upon each other and the transparent areas allow you to see through to the underbidding layers. This allows you to create different layers for different effects and adjusting the effects separately or deleting them separately, thus providing easy management.

Seashore has a nifty gradient tool where you can specify the direction and strength of the gradient. Some other features include alpha channel editing, texts with subpixel rendering, and textures.

4. MS Paint using Wine or Play On Mac

If you didn't know, Wine is an awesome and efficient way to run native Windows applications on your Mac and the best part about it is that unlike Bootcamp or VM installations, it does not require a windows license and does not add that overhead.

The setup process can be a little tedious, but it is definitely rewarding as you can run most of your Windows apps on your Mac. Play On Mac is a third-party tool built on Wine, which we recommend for installing Windows applications on Mac OS. Just download Play On Mac and all the dependencies required for Wine and then you should be able to install any Windows app of your choice. To install Paint, go to Install Apps > Graphics > Paint and hit download. MS Paint should be installed on your computer and it works just as well on any Windows PC.

Quick Tip: Although Wine is much less intensive or involving than Bootcamp or a virtual machine running Windows, it still takes up a lot of space with its dependencies and adds overhead. QEMU is an open-sourced virtualizer that allows you to run Windows for ARM on M1 Macs that would let you run Windows apps pretty seamlessly.

5. JS Paint

If you're not a fan of installing a virtual machine and just want the MS Paint app for nostalgic reasons, JS Paint is a great alternative. It's a web app that runs in your web browser and simulates the Windows XP version of paint. The web app is light-weight, doesn't consume any resources, and works like a charm.

The toolbar on the left holds the same basic tools such as fill bucket, color picker, shapes, spray paint, text, etc. You can use the cursor to select a tool and just start drawing, it's that simple. You can use it on any web browser and once the app is loaded, you can use it without an internet connection. JS Paint is great as an MS Paint alternative and you can check it out for free.

6. Pixelmator

While MS Paint is mostly about simplicity, it doesn't hurt to include a feature-packed app for all the power users out there. As I said, by no means should Pixelmator be considered a basic app as it is far from that, having a boatload of options, effects, and features.

Pixelmator also offers layers with the option of layer styles presets where you can either use a predefined preset or save your own custom style preset. It also has retouching tools, color correction tools, and a real-time effects machine along with all the drawing and brushing tools. It even sports iCloud support and the ability to publish your pictures directly to social media.

What makes Pixelmator stand out from all the other professional graphic utility apps, is its flexibility; while it does have a lot of features, one can also just use the brush or pencil tools to doodle anything just as they would in any other paint app. The app is not at all overwhelming even for a beginner and strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and productivity. If you do not mind spending $30, Pixelmator is a keeper.

Wrapping Up: Microsoft Paint for Mac

Mac OS doesn't come with any paint app but that doesn't mean that there is a dearth of paint apps on Mac and it is quite the opposite. But before downloading any third-party app, we highly recommend checking out Preview and checking whether it fulfills all your needs or not. Paint Brush is an awesome simple and easy to use paint application while Seashore is slightly more complex with the addition of layers.

Pixelmator is one heck of an app with all its features, but it is very flexible and you can use it as an MS paint replacement to a cheaper Photoshop alternative. And last but not least, if you need to use a lot of Windows apps, Wine is your best bet to get MS paint running on your Mac. So this was our list of Microsoft Paint for Mac. Which one do you use daily or did we miss yours? Let us know in the comments below.
